Multiple Callaway day; Callaway SNAT Camaro #01!!!

Post by Brangeta »

Man, Callaway and Paul Deutschman designed cars were out in droves today at Cars & Coffee! What a great Halloween morning!

The first one I saw was what I thought was Mark's aerobody car as we drove in. I was definitely surprised to find out it was Frank's B2K! My first B2K (I think? At least my first with an aerobody)! Frank was telling me that he brought this car to Cars and Coffee the first month it started, and that was the time he was parked next to the silver C12 owned by Bill Ogle (I missed this show, but saw pics of the C12, but not his car). Shocked, I said "WHAT! It was his?! Well I wish he'd bring his Camaro!" Ironic...

Then I saw a Campagna T-Rex...

Then the Callaway Alfa GTV6...
Image

And then... a huge surprise... the holy grail!

The car I have been wanting pictures of for years--and I see it in person... just a few hours after wishing the car was there!

Bill Ogle's '93 Pace Car which was the development car for the entire Callaway Camaro program!

Production #01!

When I first walked up to it, I was just walking up to it to take general pictures of a '93 Pace Car.
Image

It had no external markings from the front or side defining it as a Callaway.

It wasn't until I saw the piece of paper in the windshield that my eyes got wide and my jaw dropped. :-shok
Image

I was completely shocked and making a face underneath my sunglasses. :-wierd
Image
Image
Image
Image

I could have sworn I saw the car on TV on an old Mother's Car Show episode on ESPN Classic where it had white Run Flat wheels on it.
Image

It's no wonder identifying it and finding it has been so difficult!
Image
Image
Image

This car has several prototype parts. Most of which I can't remember off the top of my head. I knew it had prototype valve covers however.
Image

Nearly every single '93 pace car was an automatic, so I wonder if perhaps Callaway performed a manual conversion on this car.
Image

The car has some wax residue on it and the engine is in need of some cleaning (that air intake elbow is needing tire foam BAD), but it was in great shape except for a problem where it bumped another car it looks like. Perhaps someone backed into it. The car only had about 20,000 miles on it.
Image

A monumental day to me. All while dressed like Wolverine from X-men Origins and freezing in 55 degree damp weather. :-Laugh
Image
Image

What may be the best part is that the man who drove Bill's car there (Roy) said that he would try to bring 73/93 to next month's show!!!!! :-WN

So let's see... let me tally up how many different Callaways I have managed to see on purpose AND accident over the past few years...

Project C3--
-Alfa Romeo GTV6 (Val)

Project C4--
-B2K with aerobody (Frank)

Project C6--
-aerobody car (Mark)
-SNAT 435 + aerobody (Frank)
-SNAT 450 - aerobody (Dances with Snakes)
-SNAT 475 + aerobody (black one at Autorama yearrrrrrs ago)

Project C8--
-SNAT 400 - aerobody (Bill)

Project C12--
-pearl white
-red fixed roof coupe

Project C16--
-SC580 (Chris)
-silbergrau C16

Cars I still want to see...
-any C8, or for that matter, any aerobody Camaro
-Mark's lime green car
-any of the B2K Speedsters with unusual interior colors

Pretty sweet that I've seen the vast majority of these cars in just the last year! :thumb1

Brandon, Great story!

Get lots of pics of the 73/93 with a clean background for a future COTM. Please.

Re: the silver aero car. It would look SO Much better with amber turn lights :hi

Brandon, Dances with Snakes, was not an aerobody car. Neither is Bill's Camaro pictured above :wtf

Also, the Pace Car should have had RPO MXO on the RPO label. Did you look? ;)

I might be out of town that day, so I'm crossing my fingers I am back in time! Don't know what sort of background I'll be able to manage.

I like the amber lenses too.

I was using the hyphens as minus signs to show they lacked aerobodies.

The RPO code sticker would have been in the glovebox that year instead of door, so I didn't check it out. I emailed a guy who has a list of all the Pace Cars to see exactly how many cars came with manual transmissions. I know it's fairly unusual. I know of the first ~130 cars, only about 4 (if that many) were manual. This car is one of the much much later ones, so it's not a festival car or one of the first ~130. I'm not an expert on '93 as '93 Camaros were a lot different from '94-'96 Camaros, and even '97. Different engine parts, different interior parts, and the pace cars had other weird stuff. The t-tops having a dot matrix pattern on them blew my mind because I hadn't seen that before. My mom's t-tops are clear glass with velcro on them to reattach shades made of headliner material to them. The pace car just simply had a pattern of dots like the hatchback glass and no way to attach covers. So many changes were made over the years! :bulb

My 89 Trans Am had velcro tabs with sun shades in the same gray headliner material... It isn't a new thing ;)

Pace car showed MXO, I hope this helps :beer

I'll see if I can do a screenshot from the video later today. I had never seen the dot matrix stuff before. It was actually really cool and unique. It let in enough sunlight and kept out enough to keep from blinding you. Really unique, kind of like a permanent glass top. I liked it.

It took me a few days for this to dawn on me, but yes, MX0 is automatic transmission. So Callaway or somebody else converted this car, or it would have MN6, implying manual transmission.

The '93 Pace Car expert emailed me back, and had this to say:
All the 1993 pace cars except one were automatics. One six speed was produced for Jim Perkins (1993 pace car driver and Gm Exec.). I know of at least of one other 6 speed car that the owner converted. As for the T-Top versus hardtop I’ll need to look that up as I can’t put my finger on the production folder right now.

Here are two screen shots from my video.

6-speed manual, Callaway woodgrain veneer, no Callaway plaque
Image

Dot Matrix t-tops, which I've never seen before (though I've never been inside another '93).
Image

I'm going to email Joanne and see if she can tell me the options this car had. I can't remember and don't know where my issue of Road and Track is. :conf

Yeah, I understood that, sorry if I wasn't clear. :thumb1

That's what I was talking about taking awhile to soak in---that you looked it up and were telling me the answer.

Nobody was able to bring the Callaway 73/93 to the show yesterday unfortunately. That's okay though, because I didn't have much memory card room. Perhaps December 26th will bring it out of hiding :). If not, maybe the Pace Car can come back out to play and I can do a better photoshoot of it without a bunch of cars around it. :thumb1

It usually doesn't snow here, so let's hope this is a warm winter so I can photograph one of these beauties for the Callaway of the Month/Quarter :jsmile.
