Chevy trucks flex Corvette muscle
Callaway firm puts its high-speed technology to work in supercharged larger vehicles

For the past couple of decades, Callaway Corvettes have been among the fastest, most powerful cars on the road, which only makes sense since Reeves Callaway starts with Chevrolet's newest sports cars and supercharges their V-8 engines to further boost performance.

With the new Chevrolet Camaro sharing many of the powertrain components developed for the Corvette, Callaway Cars started tweaking the modern muscle car.

Now comes yet another Callaway-tweaked Chevy — the 2011 Callaway SportTruck, which is available in SC450, SC490 and SC540 versions.

"We have never done trucks as a product line before," said Callaway, who had done an occasional one-off truck project for a customer.

"Our business model is that we sell only new cars and we sell them only through Chevrolet dealers," he added. "Chevrolet dealers sell more trucks than anything else, and they were getting requests from customers to have the same kind of well-done engineering package in a truck as they can get in a Corvette or Camaro."

Callaway said that the technology "transplant" to the Chevy trucks was very similar to that from the Corvette to the Camaro.

The Callaway SportTruck package is available on 1500 and 2500 Silverados, Avalanches, Suburbans and Tahoes equipped with 5.3-, 6.0- or 6.2-liter V-8s. The package includes a Roots-style Eaton TVS (Twin Vortices Series) supercharger, liquid-to-air intercooler, carbon fiber injector covers, increased flow fuel injectors, high flow intake system, low restriction exhaust, as well as special badges, interior trim, key fob and a three-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Supercharged, the 5.3-liter produces 450 horsepower. The 6.0 makes 490. The 6.2 is rated at 540. Torque figures also climb, and yet Callaway says fuel economy numbers show very little change from factory specification. Callaway vehicles also comply with 50-state emissions regulations.

Callaway said it speaks well of General Motors' powertrain development that he is able to extract more than 100 more horsepower with "absolutely no durability or validation problems."

The basic Callaway SportTruck package price is $15,995. Also available are Callaway options including nine-spoke alloy wheels, revised suspension components, a Le Mans GT brake system, an interior package with sports seats and an extended warranty.

Callaway Cars, which has facilities in Old Lyme, Conn.; Santa Ana, Calif.; and Leingarten, Germany, are sold through 30 Chevrolet dealerships in the United States and Canada, as well as outlets in Europe, with 10 more North American dealerships to be added soon. George Matlick Chevrolet in Redford Township is the only dealership in Michigan selling Callaway-tuned Chevys.
