Re: fairy tale
This weekend got the engine in fresh paint and new waterpump installed
Removed the gearbox from the old engine and prepared flywheel and new heavier clutch to be on the new engine.
might be putting the Callaway engine back in place this weekend

Re: fairy tale
Another bear in the road to shoot.
damn I hate fairies, when do I get to the happily everafter part ?
After I found out the motorsupport rubber is broken I simply thought to re-use the one from to old engine.
but this is not a direct fitment , also I found out there is a scary hole in my new engineblock.
also alternator fitment was a as they are different from the 2 engines.
tomorrow another day , to be continued

Re: fairy tale
Meantime lots happened, forgot updates
latest news is fitment of the Turbo and its oillines.
Engine is mounted and gearbox attached, new wiring harness is made and connected.
got some great tips from other Callaway VW owners.
But were are not there yet so I need to find some more time in my busy life to get it finished.
some pics to spice up the talk

Re: fairy tale
Update,
Replacing original fuel pump with a CIS version as this system works with higher pressure instead low pressure injectors.
wire harness from donor car was , as you can guess fkd up --that why its called a fairy tale-- again dissapointment.
I kissed that dead chassis many times but it did not wake up
Preparing a new connector cable and we should be able to finish installation next weekend.
then only few steps away from testing pressures on the fuel system.
Next time I know for sure I am picking the correct time period donor and base instead of upgrading and downgrading complete cars.

Re: fairy tale
John,
The Turbosystem and the donorcar are both 1980-1985 era with the mechanical high pressure injection called CIS.
My Cabriolet is a 1991 and already new type everything , like fuel rail with injectors etc etc.
So in ways I am actually downgrading my car to become time correct
Sometimes I wished I bought a complete programmable standalone system but I am going for the nostalgic looks and drive.
Do you hear me now

The motor wire harness from the "old" engine was -lucky me- plug n play to the fuse panel.

Re: fairy tale
Preparing the car for its journey to the exhaust wizard
He is going to fit a new downpipe to tail and fitting the Turbosmart wastegate as this has different flanges that the original.
after that I should be ready for the first time startup

Yep , its running and driving.
Only issues with boost, cannot drive full throttle as it starts to stutter and clutch is though new having problems with the torque.

Re: fairy tale
Yesterday , the car was parked again.
Oil was draining out of the intercooler
I decided to look for the ultra rare non AC version intercooler which is front mount instead low mount.
and found one !!! speaking of luck and it is shipping as we speak
The one I have now

Re: fairy tale
What's the source of the oil? Location and orientation of the intercooler may not be a factor.

Re: fairy tale
The reason for this trouble is probably because I included the carterventilation on top of the valve cover to the vacuum system en this is good with natural aspirated engines but when you put pressure on the ventilation the oil return gets clogged and therefore pushed out at turbo inlet and in my case I think also crankcase seal through to the clutch.
When I start working on the clutch I can convince myself I am Mega stupid
Untill then I ignore my mistake
The non A/C intercooler is almost as rare as the 100+ intake so I needed to score anyhow
