Yes it would appear that the vent line from the 87 only drivers side oil collection can to the air oil separator failed under the pressure when the belt broke and the pump stopped. I have an 88 as well and as you say the triangular catch can for the returning oil is much larger then the 87's. I wonder if Callaway made the 88 on can so much larger to give you time to notice the cloud of smoke before the oil gets to the air oil separator? The fire did appear to start and be the most concentrated around the power steering pump area so ties in to the fact that the vent line may have failed under the oil pressure from the turbo.
