Hi, everyone. Did Callaway swap the starter for a compact unit, or did it stay stock? 88 B2K. I’m thinking of fitting a new solenoid.

If I recall, the starter is stock but with the Callaway adapter plate added. I do think that the starter design was changed mid year 1988 or at a minimum the beginning of 1989.

After inspection, looks like Callaway fitted a mini starter. Have a call in to Callaway for information, maybe they can tell me more.

Nope. Just talked with Wayne McCurdy @ Callaway. Factory starter is clocked for turbo clearance. Requires a 9/16” swivel to remove inboard bolt. Will tackle this weekend.

Is yours a factory starter? Not in the sense of how it's fitted. You should have an anodized blue bracket, and different mounting hardware. Best to have a local shop rebuild what you have.

I just looked at an L98 starter and a Callaway starter, and they are physically the same size. But as mentioned, clocked differently. Again, best to rebuild what you have.

Also, the Corvette starters were MUCH smaller than Camaro or Firebird V8 starters of the same year, which will not fit, even though the same engine code (L98).

Hi, Chris. Thanks for the reply. The car still has the starter it was delivered with. It is prone to heat soak, seems to be endemic to the 88s. Even with the 9/16th swivel Wayne suggested I haven't been able to access the inboard bolt. Decided that even if I lucked into getting a socket on it I'd never be able to get it back on later. So the starter is staying as-is. :jsmile

I replaced the brake switch and the fan switch pigtail, so the other little projects are finished off. Hope to have the car out and inspected this weekend.

Can you put a heat shield around it? Might help with the soak. DEI makes a Velcro one that wraps the starter.

Wayne suggested a heat insulating wrap (being very careful if using a mylar or metallic one). I have one to install but don't think I can get it around the starter in situ.

I had a suggestion from an 88 B2k owner to drop the Callaway block, then a fix the new starter and reinstall the entire unit. I will attach some pics.
