89 Lug Nut Cover Bolt Stuck - Callaway Dymag

Removing the Dymags to have new tires mounted. The new to me car has 3800 miles and I don't know if the covers have been off before. Three were really tight but came off. One is not loosening. I sprayed the security bolt head with BP Blaster, but I am not sure if it will get to the threads. Any suggestions as to how to get the security bolt off without causing any damage?

What I would do, it take electric tape and place over bolt hole. Then, take a large center punch and a big hammer, and tap (progressively harder) until you feel some force has "shook" the bolt loose from the galvanic corrosion between the steel and magnesium surfaces.*

Then, once out, use anti seize paste so next time it doesn't "stick". Same w/ the backside of the wheel to the brake rotor.

Hope this helps. :hi

Welcome! Pretty sure I know which car you bought...what a beauty!!

I’d use a soft sided dead blow hammer and give it a few taps with a microfiber cloth over the end. There is a rubber gasket that has probably melded to the paint.

The wheels will most likely be frozen to the hubs as well(unless the felt is still between the wheel and hub). Those will have to be broken loose as well. A layer of dielectric grease will keep that from happening again.

Try some heat, too, but not from an open flame!

Also, if you have an impact ratchet, that might be able to knock it loose. I'm not talking about the big impact guns, just the ratchet set on low torque. You just want to hit with a bunch of vibrations, but not enough to mangle anything.

Nothing has work so far. Heat from a heat gun, cold from freeze spray, shock with pneumatic hammer. I am at the point of going to having a mechanic drill out the security bolt.

Impact Driver, have you tried one of these?

Carefully drilling the head off the McGuard security belt would be nothing new, but be VERY CAREFUL.*

Once you remove the head, you could put a set of vice grips and remove the rest, one might think.

It didn't happen to me but I've heard you can weld a bolt to them with a head that can turn it out.

:wtf

I am finally back with the wheel off and new tires mounted. I failed to get the security bolt off. Took the car to a mechanic that does a lot of work on muscle cars, race cars and vintage cars. He drill the bolt and tried an easy out. The head of the security bolt snapped off. That got the cover off, but not enough threads were left to work on the bolt. Finally, the nuclear option. He drilled out the bolt and put in a heli-coil so a factory security bolt works.

With new tires, flushed brake fluid and coolant, I am ready to drive the car a little this weekend. Still need to flush the trans and differential fluids.

Thank to all for your suggestions.

Did you change the clutch fluid?

When I got my '90 with only 3,300 miles on the clock ... the security bolt for the lug cover was stripped, I had to carefully drill that out. It took soooo long but I was able to get it out without damaging the Dymags. Not a fun process!
