FIA GT boss weighs North American GT3 series

FIA GT boss Stéphane Ratel has called for a mid-November meeting, where he will discuss the possibility of a North American series.
North America could have its own series for GT3 cars--such as the Audi R8 LMS and the Aston Martin DBRS9--as early as next season.

FIA GT boss Stéphane Ratel, who created the GT3 category in Europe for the 2006 season, has called for a mid-November meeting with the manufacturers and specialist tuners that build cars to GT3 specifications; a North American series is high on the agenda.

“I want to listen to what they have to say,” Ratel said. “This is customer racing, and if I can give them more opportunities to sell cars, then that is good.”

Ratel also suggested that there is room for GT3 in North America.

“America is a crowded marketplace, but it is crowded by series focused on prototypes [Grand-Am and the American Le Mans Series],” he said. “My opinion is that the most glamorous cars [GTs] should not be in a secondary class.”

Audi Sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich said he supports any move that will allow the R8 LMS GT3 car to race in the United States and Canada. He noted that he prefers a stand-alone series, rather than allowing the R8 to join Grand-Am's GT class--a move that Grand-Am is considering.
