1987 Callaway engine
I have the opportunity to buy the engine and 4+3 trans out of a 1987 Corvette that was totaled years ago. I have the numbers and verified it with Callaway, all the stories match up. As far as I know it’s complete except 1 intercooler which may be in the garage somewhere, I just haven’t seen it yet. Can anyone help as far as a value for this? It’s basically an unknown, sitting on a pallet in a dark garage just begging to be saved. Thanks in advance!

Hard to put a value on it. It can't just be dropped into a C4. There were frame modifications that were done to make the turbos fit.

Surf, I remember a red totaled one with a broken intercooler, could that be the car he is referring to?

I know what you’re saying but I don’t want to put it in a C4. Is it worth $5k?

Re: 1987 Callaway engine
Intercoolers are still available from Callaway Cars, so that's good news.
Valid point on the fitment, although I know of a 1990 Callaway which was totaled, the engine went into a street rod, and the rest was dismantled/scrapped (Aerobody was salvaged and stored)
Anyways, is it worth $5k. Sure, sounds reasonable for a (fairly) complete Callaway Corvette engine. What are the numbers on the pad in front of the passenger-side cylinder head, etched on the block?

This is 164 which was in car 164. The last 4 of the VIN is stamped under the sequence number. This engine was put into a street rod in the early 90’s and removed about 5 years ago.*89x2* wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 9:44 pm Intercoolers are still available from Callaway Cars, so that's good news.

It’s not the best pic, but the conditions were less than ideal.

That pic, $2,000 for that mess, as I’m charitable for the Christmas season.

The presentation does leave a bit to be desired. It was hard to even be able to get an overall pic with all the stuff in there around itNever_Lift wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 10:56 pm That pic, $2,000 for that mess, as I’m charitable for the Christmas season.

Minus the 1 intercooler, it looks complete.

Re: 1987 Callaway engine
I have no idea. To say this came as a complete surprise would be the understatement of the year. I think I’ll just focus on restoring the engine for now and see what comes along.

What's the latest on this? Don't forget to get the Callaway emblems for the intake plenum.

Re: 1987 Callaway engine
I’ve got it home and have been removing all the accessories off the front and generally getting it tidied up a bit so I can get it on a stand. I’m talking with a local engine builder about assessing the state of the internals once I get it separated from the trans. Took both valve covers off and it looks brand new topside. #8 spark plug is completely carbon covered. That’s the only one I’ve pulled so far for no particular reason.
So, I’ve been wondering about the intake. Most of the pics I see on the interwebs have the black wrinkle finish but mine appears to have been “polished” like the rams horn and runners. Were all the early cars this way? When did the black finish come about? Are there any resources for pics of the engines before being re-installed? I know some of the accessories and brackets I have are not original.

Re: 1987 Callaway engine
All the 87-91 Callaway engines had the black wrinkle finish. Here's a pic of an engine from 1987 to help. It appears original in the pic:
