Serpentine belt removal question

Post by conesare2seconds »

Hi everyone. I need to have my alternator rebuilt and have been putting it off for almost a year because I'm a little scared of the belt tensioner. Callaway replaced the idler pulley with a secondary oil pump (hope that's an accurate description). Is the idler pulley function retained? In other words, what is the same or different from the regular C4 when it comes to releasing the tension from and removing the serpentine belt?

It's the exact same, just push down on the tensioner and slip the belt off. It's a bit of a job but can be done by one guy.

I purchased 1989 #35 a couple of months ago and it needed a belt replacement--the belt on it is really cracked. I got one from Wayne at Callaway (they still stock these belts), but I couldn't move the tensioner enough to get the old belt off. It moved maybe 1/2 inch. While I don't know if that movement is enough, I can say the belt wouldn't budge, maybe due to the age and hardness of the belt.

Pop the top bolt out on the alternator and allow it to swing. That will get you the movement you need to remove the belt. :thumbs
