1987 callaway turbo leaking.

Hey guys Merry Christmas Notice smoke coming out of my exhaust. Lifted the car up and found this. It's leaking on the driver's Turbo,not the passenger. I have full pressure and power. It just started leaking. About 3 or 4 miles ago.,smoking. Any suggestions? I have noticed the tensioner hitting the ac more at idle.

Hi There: This is fairly common after almost 40 years. The turbos—I think yours are IHI—are water cooled for durability and reliability. If it is coolant, then you need to try to find the location of the leak.

I believe there are two coolant lines to each turbo—a feed and a return. Check the connections for tightness and corrosion. If you need a new part, try Wayne at Callaway in Old Lyme. He’s great.

As far as power and pressure goes, you won’t see a difference if the coolant line is leaking. And I don't think the tensioner has anything to do with it, but you should get the leak fixed as soon as possible. It could only get worse and again, the coolant is used to mitigate the heat from the turbo.

Those can be rebuilt. IHI still makes a variant of that turbo. I’d pull them and have them gone thru.
